Barrel of Fun was the prominent arcade located within Memphis’s Hickory Ridge Mall during the early 1980s until it relocated and rebuilt to be near the mall food court in 1987 as the chain’s new “2001 Entertainment” brand (See “2001 Entertainment 19”). During the mall’s prime in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the arcade was a popular entertainment destination for visitors. As the Hickory Ridge Mall experienced a significant decline in the 2000s, culminating in severe tornado damage in 2008, the arcade ceased operations along with many of the mall’s other businesses. The venue is now permanently closed but is remembered as a local social hub from that era.
