Grand Prix Race-O-Rama was founded by Pittsburgh natives Jules Ross and his business partner Ron Mogerman in 1972 as a basic go-kart racing track for kids. The establishment saw rapid growth almost immediately, expanding to add animatronics, private parties, pinball and arcades.
Ross received heavy resistance from both residents, state and federal officials during the 1980’s as he attempted to expand Race-O-Rama in what was at the time somewhat under-developed Ft Lauderdale area compared to nearby Miami. Sometime in 1984 this original location closed and was moved to Dania Beach, FL in 1985. While nothing was officially disclosed, it is believed the property was sold to investors and the state.
Following the move, the original location was quickly re-zoned to a commercial retail space and the north quarter of the property was used to expand Interstate 595. The retail space was eventually demolished and an industrial zone was built in its place.
