During the golden age of the arcade, Twilite Zone was one of the premier destinations for video game and pinball enthusiasts in Groton, Connecticut. It was located in the Groton Shopping Center next to T.J. Maxx. It was part of a national chain of plush family entertainment centers with locations stretching from Massachusetts to Puerto Rico, the Groton location served a particularly active market thanks to the nearby U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the large U.S. Naval Submarine Base, and the area’s industrial workforce.
The arcade became especially well known in 1981 when it hosted the “Zone Challenge,” a massive video game and pinball tournament designed to determine the best coin-operated game player in southeastern Connecticut. The promotion attracted an impressive 256 competitors, with players competing head-to-head through multiple elimination rounds. The grand prize was an all-expenses-paid trip to Walt Disney World for two, including airfare, hotel accommodations, a rental car, and park admission. Local radio station Q-105 helped promote the tournament, while the arcade blanketed the area with posters, billboards, and promotional signage.
Surviving photographs from around late 1981 or early 1982 give a fascinating glimpse of the Groton Twilite Zone and show a substantial collection of contemporary arcade and pinball machines. Collectors who have viewed the photographs have remarked on the impressive selection of games, making the images an important visual record of the arcade during the height of the early-1980s video game boom.
Twilite Zone’s combination of video games, pinball, organized competition, and family-oriented entertainment made it more than simply a place to play games—it was a destination and gathering place for the region’s growing arcade culture. The Groton location stands as a particularly well-documented example of how arcades in the early 1980s used tournaments and local promotion to turn the emerging video game craze into a community event.
